The VZ-9AV Avrocar was a genuine disc-shaped experimental aircraft funded by the U.S. Army and Air Force during the Cold War. It was not an anti-gravity machine and did not violate physics. It relied on three conventional turbojet engines, airflow, and ground effect—the same physical principles used by other powered aircraft and hovercraft.
The Project Began in Canada

Canadian manufacturer A.V. Roe developed the concept in the early 1950s while exploring a supersonic vertical-takeoff fighter-bomber. Canada initially funded the work but withdrew as costs increased. Avro then offered the project to the United States, and the U.S. Army and Air Force assumed control in 1958.
A Giant Fan Created Its Lift

The engines drove a circular “turborotor” inside the aircraft. Exhaust was directed downward to create a cushion of air beneath the disc, allowing it to hover close to the ground. Engineers hoped that redirecting the thrust rearward would produce forward acceleration and allow the aircraft to climb. No gravity-canceling force was involved.
The Military Had Two Different Visions

The Army wanted a low-flying transport and reconnaissance vehicle capable of crossing rough terrain. The Air Force imagined a craft that could hover beneath enemy radar and then accelerate to supersonic speed. Avro claimed one design might satisfy both services, but the requirements demanded very different performance from the same small aircraft.
Early Ambitions Reached Supersonic Speeds

The circular-wing program had once aimed at an extremely fast vertical-takeoff aircraft. The operational Avrocar prototypes never approached those ambitions. Scale testing already showed that the air cushion became unstable several feet above the ground, making controlled high-altitude or high-speed flight unlikely.
The Disc Began “Hubcapping”

When the Avrocar rose more than about three feet, it developed uncontrolled pitching and rolling motions. Engineers called the behavior “hubcapping” because the craft rocked like a loose hubcap. NASA wind-tunnel testing also found insufficient control for high-speed flight and confirmed that the design was aerodynamically unstable.
Its Top Speed Was Only 35 MPH

The prototype could reach a maximum speed of approximately 35 miles per hour. Repeated attempts failed to solve its instability. Instead of becoming a supersonic fighter or futuristic troop carrier, it remained a difficult-to-control machine that performed best only while hovering close to a prepared surface.
The Saucer Shape Fuelled the Legend

The Avrocar looked remarkably similar to the flying saucers appearing in 1950s science-fiction films. Its classified development and military backing made later anti-gravity stories seem plausible. In reality, its circular shape was an aerodynamic experiment, and declassified photographs, diagrams and test films openly show its turbojets and internal fan system.
The Project Ended in 1961

After engineers failed to eliminate the instability, the program was canceled in December 1961. One prototype is now displayed at the National Museum of the United States Air Force, while another belongs to the U.S. Army Transportation Museum. The Avrocar remains a fascinating technological failure—not evidence that the military mastered anti-gravity or broke the laws of physics.
