On July 25, 1976, NASA’s Viking 1 orbiter photographed a mesa in Mars’ Cydonia region while searching for a landing site for Viking 2. The 1.5-kilometer-wide formation appeared to have eyes, a nose and a mouth. NASA’s original caption immediately explained that shadows created the facial illusion and that enlarged transmission errors produced the image’s speckled appearance.
The Image Was Extremely Limited

Viking photographed the feature from approximately 1,873 kilometers away with the Sun only about 20 degrees above the horizon. That low lighting placed much of the mesa in deep shadow. The image contained far less detail than later Mars photography, allowing the human brain to complete an incomplete pattern and interpret ordinary terrain as a familiar face.
The “Second Photo” Story Became Distorted

A popular claim says NASA promised another image taken under different lighting but never showed it. The official 1976 NASA caption does not describe a hidden photograph or claim that a second image had already disproved the face. The idea of one decisive missing picture appears to have grown through later retellings rather than from the original published description.
Viking Did Not Produce Modern-Quality Close-Ups

Viking captured multiple views of the broader Cydonia region, but the available 1970s images were limited by distance, resolution, lighting, and transmission technology. Another low-resolution frame could not provide the clarity later audiences expected. The scientific interpretation nevertheless remained that the formation was a naturally eroded mesa shaped into a face-like appearance by shadow.
NASA Returned With a Much Better Camera

Mars Global Surveyor photographed the formation on April 5, 1998. The image had a resolution of 4.3 meters per pixel—approximately ten times sharper than the best previous Viking view. NASA says the raw image was processed and transferred to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory for online release shortly after it arrived on Earth.
Better Light Removed the Familiar Face

The 1998 image showed irregular slopes, ridges and eroded terrain rather than symmetrical facial features. Additional Mars Global Surveyor data collected in 2001 supported the same conclusion. The supposed eyes and mouth did not appear consistently when photographed with improved resolution and different lighting.
Europe Produced a Three-Dimensional View

ESA’s Mars Express repeatedly attempted to photograph Cydonia between 2004 and 2006. Some passes were affected by high altitude, dust or haze, but on July 22, 2006, the spacecraft captured detailed stereo data. The resulting three-dimensional views showed landslides, scarps and eroded massifs typical of natural Martian geology.
Other Shapes Appeared for the Same Reason

Mars Express imagery also revealed a nearby formation that could be interpreted as a skull. Scientists did not treat that resemblance as evidence of a carved monument. When landscapes are viewed from overhead, random combinations of ridges, shadows and craters frequently resemble faces or familiar objects—a pattern-recognition effect known as pareidolia.
The Later Images Did Appear

The central premise is therefore misleading. NASA and ESA did publish later, far clearer images of the Face on Mars. Those photographs did not support an artificial monument or an ancient Martian civilization. The story of a missing second image survived because it offered a more dramatic narrative than the evidence: an ordinary mesa photographed once under unusually suggestive lighting.
